Russia uses its Sukhoi fleet of fighter jets to try to control Syrian airspace.
One model frequently used is the Su-30. It can reach a maximum speed of over 1,300 mph; can be mounted with a machine gun and antiship and air-to-air missiles; and can carry plenty of bombs.
The Su-30 also sometimes provides cover for Russia's bigger bombers.
